Top Zoology Videos Found on YouTube EDU

YouTube EDU is a useful way to quickly find the online science lectures you're looking for. Chances are if a particular video lecture exists online, you're going to find it on YouTube first. For example, it didn't take much to uncover the following five incredibly informative videos relating to zoological studies. Whether you're in high school and need background information for an animal sciences report, or are looking to get a job with Huntingdon Life Sciences, these videos are sure prove both interesting and insightful.

This article is a guest post by Jenna Smith.

What Makes a Zoologist?

What Makes a Zoologist? Video

Aimed at prospective undergraduates at Trinity College Dublin, this presentation gives insight into the nitty gritty of zoology. It's less lion taming and more monitoring diet through daily examination of scat.

Evolution of Learning and Decision Making in Social Groups

Evolution of Learning and Decision Making in Social Groups Video

The development of social structures within species has been an enormous boost in terms of evolutionary success. The role social groups have played in the development of intelligence is outlined by Professor Arnon Lotem in this half-hour long lecture recorded at Tel-Aviv University.

Advocates for Science: The Role of Academic Environmental Scientists Video

Dr. Jane Lubchenco has the proud honor of being the first woman to serve as the head of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But prior to her historical appointment, Lubchenco gave this passionate presentation at Oregon State University regarding the role of the scientist as an educator and public citizen.

Inside Nature with Dr. Henry Gee

Inside Nature with Dr. Henry Gee Video

In October of 2010 world-renowned senior editor of Nature Dr. Henry Gee was kind enough to give an hour-long lecture at the Grant Museum that covered the ins and outs of the scientific journal he presides over. It's a great way for folks to get familiar with the ways in which findings in the field are translated into the papers we read.

University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, a Priceless Collection of Life

University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, a Priceless Collection of Life Video

Recorded in the fall of 2009, this nearly one-hour long video highlights the history of this one-of-kind museum located on the University of Michigan campus. It provides a unique look into the hard work involved in maintaining such a rich catalog of animal specimens and plethora of zoological knowledge.

Alex Ophir - Animal Communications Expert

Alex Ophir - Animal Communications Expert Video

Researchers have only just begun to crack the code of animal communication. Oklahoma State University's Alex Ophir has been recognized by zoologists the world over regardining his breakthroughs in understanding the commanalities between varying animal calls. In this 4:23 long video, Ophir explains his findings.

The 21st Century Challenge of Zoo Medicine

The 21st Century Challenge of Zoo Medicine Video

Figuring out treatments and cures for thousands of varying species isn't easy. The science behind development of medicines for exotic animals is fascinating, yet incredibly complex. This half-hour long video gives an authoritative breakdown of what zoologists are faced with when seeking cures and treatments for their animal charges.

The Plight of Tigers in the United States

The Plight of Tigers in the United States Video

At over an hour it's the longest video on the list, but this informative expose created by the Massachusetts School of Law reveals the unfortunate state of current exotic animal welfare laws around the United States. It serves as an overview of how much work goes into looking after wildlife, and how easily people can underestimate the challenges of caring for exotic animals.

Moving the Grant Museum

Moving the Grant Museum Video

Sometimes museums are moved into new buildings, which means all the pieces on display as well as those cataloged in the back must be moved as well. This brief video shows the process involved in transplanting the 68,000 animal specimens from the Grant Museum's old location to a new space, which reveals a whole host of helpful hints about how to pack and unpack the fragile pieces that are vital to further understanding of animal science.

Art by Animals

Art by Animals Video

While debate rages on as to whether or not animal art is the result of random play or sophisticated thought patterns, the Grant Museum is also behind this 4-minute long clip that covers an ongoing exhibit at the University College London that showcases artwork created by elephants, apes and other animal species.

Those interested in animal science stand to gain enormously from the array of free videos online that focus on that specific field. The aforementioned five should be enough to get you started, but use YouTube EDU and other science video aggregates to find lectures and documentaries that cover virtually all sections of zoology.

Enjoy!
